OMA IMPS

The OMA has a working group and released the specifications for a service that provides presence management and instant messaging features.
The protocol is obviously made for the mobile, is supposed to be “friendly” with your battery and network usage.
Official specifications are available from the OMA site in the official release program. Look for “OMA Instant Messaging and Presence Service”.

The OMA has provided the specifications, but the implementation is left to third parties. In short, you need a server somewhere on the Internet and a client on your mobile device. Some mobile devices have an embedded client, some Nokia, Motorola and SonyEricsson, among the others.
Mobile operators might provide a server inside their network, or, alternatively, users can connect to public (or private) servers on the Internet.
Network costs will be at the users’ charge. Data plans should be considered carefully.
